Friday Chess Club K-5 Winter 2020

Friday Chess Club K-5

Grades K-5 Fridays 2:25-3:30 Library

Friday Chess Club is a safe and fun activity for all students!  Playing chess improves memory, concentration, IQ, foresight, math skills, reading skills, creativity, and problem-solving skills. No experience is necessary. "Coach Ray" provides puzzles, lessons, videos, and one-on-one play each week, monitors student progress, and helps with any questions. "Coach Ray" notifies parents and students about upcoming chess tournaments (participation is optional).  If students participate in tournaments and win enough points, then they may receive a trophy and are eligible for the Washington State Chess Championships in April 2020!  Parents, please pack Chess Club snacks for your hungry student(s).  Chess Club will have a end-of-term potluck and awards ceremony on April 3, 2020.  All Chess Club families are invited!  Chess Club includes a mentor program, where experienced students play and advise Kindergarteners and new club members.

Kindergarteners should bring an adult (parent/guardian) with them to each class to help the student focus and play. Kindergartener parents may contact "Coach Ray" if they will be late or absent for a class.

Friday Chess Club includes:

1. Twelve (12) after-school enrichment classes.

2. 24-hour, online, Gold Membership access to ChessKid.com, a PC- and Mac- accessible program especially designed for elementary-aged children, including puzzles, lessons, chess videos, and one-on-one play vs other students, "Coach Ray," or computer bots.  Each student receives a unique username and password.

3. Personal Chess "Pieces." Each student chooses an army of 17 pieces from among 14 possible colors.  Each army comes with an extra queen.

Chess Club T-shirts will be offered seperately to those parents who request an order.
